Trouble with networking in XP

Having trouble getting all your comptuers to see each other on the
network when you're using winXP and win9x?

In Floodwood

Tim and I drove up to Floodwood to help Dave network his comptuers.
He has an old HP Color Laserjet with an Ethernet port on it. We got
that hooked into the network rather than using the Parallel port. And
we got winXP sharing files with Win98 on his laptop and Win95 on his
old Pentium 166 with 32 Mb Ram.

We're using Tim's broadband router (Dave will get his own before we
leave) - and The 12 port hub I gave him. The router and hub are
connected through the hub's uplink port. There's only one computer
connected to the hub right now - I just wanted to make sure that it
would work that way. It does. If it didn't have an uplink port, you
could just use any port with a crossover cable. I'm not sure what the
router's dhcp server will do when it sees more than 4 computers at
once though. We only have 3 computers and the laserprinter connected
to it right now (including the one on the hub). (It's only a 4-port
router. I don't know if it can handle more than 4 dhcp clients, but
we can use static IP if it has a problem).

Memory Ln.

I drove past my old house today. It looks the same, but it's wierd and stuff. They added a bay window to the kitchen. I didn't notice any other major changes. There was a round pen for horse training in the side field. The mailbox was all smashed up just like always. It was kinda sad to see it again and relive all the memories.

Are we dead or is this Ohio?

I'm in Ohio now. Always remember to obey the speed limit in Ohio. I know that I've had it much easier now that I do.

I'm heading to PA today and then back to MN with Tim. Then we'll be going to Wyoming (eventually).

Lots of RAM for Unix

quoted from Teach Yourself... UNIX 3rd Edition :
"[Many] experts advise the purchase of UNIX systems with huge amounts of RAM. UNIX workstations with 64 megabytes of RAM are not uncommon these days, especially those systems dealing with graphics"

Of course this was written in 1995. Most UNIX commands haven't changed much since then. They've just gotten better GUI's and stuff. So most of the information in the book is still useful. I learned a few things about awk, sed, troff, and some other programs that aren't too popular anymore because of the GUI tools, but are still used for scripts and stuff.

Teach Yourself Unix

I was at the library a few days ago and found a book from '95 - Teach Yourself Unix: 2nd edition. Or something. It's old, but while browsing through it, I found that it had some information about some aspects of Unix that I hadn't been too familiar with, so I borrowed it. I read the entire book including the parts about stuff that I already know from working with GNU/Linux. It was pretty interresting and I learned a lot of stuff about some of the more obscure and historic Unix commands. I want to post some quotes from the book, but I might do that to the tech blog.

Now I'm reading an advanced C++ programming manual because it's been quite a while since I did anything in C++ and I want to brush up on it a bit because I want to start programming again.
